Every age has its seductions. Ours arrives glowing. It comes in the language of progress and possibility. Faster searches. Smarter machines. Frictionless payments. Infinite connection. A world made more efficient, more personalised, more responsive to our needs and desires. The digital age has sold itself, brilliantly, as an expansion of human freedom. And in many ways, it has been. It has opened markets, collapsed distances, loosened old hierarchies, and placed astonishing tools into ordinary hands. But seduction has always depended on what it leaves unsaid.
Behind the convenience of the platform era came an economy built on surveillance, extraction, and the quiet monetisation of human behaviour. Behind the emancipatory language of Web3 came a culture too often consumed by hype, pump and dumps, and speculative instinct in modern dress. Now, behind the clean rhetoric of artificial intelligence, there is again the same intoxicating promise: more power, more speed, more reach, more mastery over the world as it is. The question is what has been traded away to secure it.
Long before the digital age, literature had already grasped the danger of such temptation. Nearly five centuries ago, Christopher Marlowe gave it enduring form in Faustus, a man so captivated by the promise of greater knowledge and command that he loses sight of what such power may cost. The story has endured not because every reader knows the play closely, but because its moral pattern remains instantly recognisable. Ambition reaches beyond restraint. Power expands more quickly than wisdom. The price is postponed, until postponement itself begins to look like permission. By the time the reckoning arrives, the bargain has already done its work.
There is something uncomfortably familiar in that pattern now. For more than two decades, the digital economy has moved forward by persuading society that ethics could wait. Privacy could be surrendered for convenience. Attention could be harvested in exchange for participation. Regulation could come later. Accountability could follow scale. Even the language of disruption carried its own moral camouflage, flattering recklessness as vision and treating hesitation as a failure of imagination. The result was not the death of ethics, exactly, but their steady relegation to the margins of systems designed first for growth.
Today, as investors pour extraordinary sums into anything touched by AI and governments frame chips, models, and compute as instruments of strategic urgency, that bargain is becoming harder to ignore. The valuations are larger, the stakes more geopolitical, the language more respectable. Yet the underlying question is still the old one. When a society becomes enthralled by what technology can do, does it eventually stop asking what it should do, and who is left to bear the cost of that silence?
This is why digital ethics matters now in a sharper way than before. Not as corporate vocabulary. Not as a decorative layer of responsibility wrapped around products already built. But as a test of whether the modern world still possesses the moral confidence to place limits on its own appetites. From Facebook’s data capture to crypto’s speculative theatre and AI’s runaway ascent, the digital age has repeatedly promised emancipation while rewarding concentration, opacity, and delayed accountability.
What stands before us, then, is not simply a question about technology. It is a question about civilisation, appetite, and restraint. About whether progress, pursued without moral discipline, begins to resemble less a triumph of human ingenuity than a polished form of surrender.
When the Internet Learned to Extract
For a time, the internet was able to present itself as something close to innocence.
Its early mythology was generous. It would flatten hierarchy, dissolve borders, widen access to knowledge, and give ordinary people a voice once denied by gatekeepers. There was truth in that vision. The web did open culture. It did unsettle old monopolies of information. It did make participation possible on a scale that would once have seemed extraordinary. Yet the moral authority of the early internet also depended on a convenient misunderstanding: that a system could expand at immense speed without eventually deciding what, exactly, it valued most.
What it came to value, above all, was attention.
That shift changed everything. Once digital platforms discovered that human behaviour could be observed, measured, predicted, and sold with extraordinary precision, the internet ceased to be merely a communications revolution. It became an extraction economy. The user was no longer simply a participant in a shared digital space, but a source of data, a pattern of habits, a stream of signals turned into value. What had once appeared open and liberating acquired a more intimate commercial logic. The system learned not just to host human activity, but to watch it, sort it, and profit from it.
This was the real moral turn of the platform era. The issue was never only privacy, at least not in the narrow legal sense. It was the normalisation of a deeper bargain. In exchange for ease, society accepted unprecedented visibility. In exchange for connection, it accepted surveillance disguised as convenience. The language remained cheerful, even utopian, but the underlying structure grew harder, more asymmetrical, more extractive. People were told they were joining communities. In practice, they were also feeding systems designed to anticipate desire, shape attention, and sell behavioural certainty to whoever could afford it.
Facebook became the clearest emblem of this age, not because it was uniquely guilty, but because it expressed the logic so perfectly. What looked like social connection at planetary scale was also a commercial architecture built on intimacy converted into data. Friendship, preference, outrage, vulnerability, curiosity, loneliness, affiliation, all of it could be rendered into signals. And once rendered into signals, it could be ranked, targeted, amplified, and exploited.
The true scandal of that era was not simply that data was collected. It was that a civilisation increasingly behaved as though this was a reasonable price for modernity. This is why the language of ethics so often felt weak beside the platform economy. Ethics asks whether something should be done. Extraction asks whether it can be scaled. And in the digital age, scale usually won. By the time public outrage caught up, through privacy scandals, manipulation fears, and mounting unease over the reach of large platforms, the architecture had already become ordinary. People no longer encountered surveillance as an intrusion. They encountered it as the background condition of participation.
That is often how moral change happens in technological life. Rarely through one dramatic fall, more often through accommodation. A line is crossed, then normalised, then forgotten. What once seemed invasive begins to look inevitable. What once demanded consent begins to operate by habit. The public does not so much approve the new order as adapt to it, until dependence itself begins to feel like freedom.
That history matters now because it explains why the present debate over AI feels both new and familiar. The ethical instability did not begin with artificial intelligence. It began earlier, when the internet discovered that the most profitable version of human life online was the one most easily watched, measured, and steered. AI enters a world already shaped by that lesson. It does not arrive on morally neutral ground. It arrives on terrain prepared by years of digital expansion in which the capture of human experience was increasingly part of the business model.
The cost was not paid all at once. It was folded gradually into the everyday architecture of life online, until it began to feel normal.
The Revolt That Resembled the System
If the platform era taught the internet how to watch, Web3 arrived claiming it could teach it how to let go. Its appeal was understandable. After years in which power had gathered around a handful of platforms, each feeding on user data, behavioural prediction, and dependence, the idea of a more decentralised digital order carried genuine moral force. Here, at least in theory, was a chance to build differently. To distribute power rather than hoard it. To allow users to hold assets, identities, and value without surrendering themselves entirely to corporate intermediaries. To imagine an internet in which ownership might be broader, participation more direct, and trust embedded not in a platform’s promise, but in transparent rules.
For many, this was not simply a technical proposition. It was an ethical one. Web3 spoke in the language of self sovereignty, permissionless access, and liberation from gatekeepers. It was, in part, a rebellion against the architecture that had come to dominate the modern internet. If Facebook represented the concentration of social power, and the wider platform economy had turned human experience into a commercial resource, then decentralisation appeared to offer a route back towards dignity.
That ambition should not be dismissed lightly. It recognised something important before much of mainstream politics did: that digital concentration was not merely an economic problem, but a civic and moral one. Who owns the system matters. Who controls the rails matters. Who profits from participation matters.
And yet, almost as soon as it began to gather momentum, another familiar pattern emerged. What had entered public imagination as a challenge to centralisation was quickly overtaken by speculation, theatrical wealth, and moral evasions of its own. Tokens multiplied faster than institutions could understand them. Communities formed around the language of liberation, while money rushed in with motives that were often far less elevated. Pump and dump schemes, manipulated markets, inflated promises, and the glamour of sudden riches came to define much of the public face of the sector.
This was the deeper disappointment of the Web3 moment. It was not that it failed to produce any valuable ideas. It was that a movement which had set out, at least in part, to correct the ethical failures of the internet so often reproduced them in another register. Power gathered again. Wealth concentrated again. Insiders benefited again. Moral language remained abundant, but practice often drifted elsewhere. Even where the code was distributed, influence frequently was not.
That does not make decentralisation meaningless. Nor does it erase the importance of ideas such as self custody, distributed identity, or new forms of collective governance. But it does force a more sober conclusion. Technology cannot save ethics simply by rearranging infrastructure. The moral failures of the digital age do not lie in centralisation alone. They lie also in human appetite, weak governance, the seductions of speed and wealth, and the enduring fantasy that better systems can exempt their participants from ordinary moral discipline.
In this sense, Web3 became less a clean alternative to the internet that preceded it than a revealing mirror. It showed how difficult it is to build a more ethical digital order inside a culture already trained to reward hype, frictionless gain, and expansion before reflection. The tools changed. The temptation did not.
The Convenience of Surrender
No digital order sustains itself by force alone. It survives because, at some level, it is accepted. That is one of the more uncomfortable truths beneath the modern internet. For all the justified criticism directed at platforms, financiers, founders, and now AI firms, the digital economy also drew its strength from the ordinary habits of millions who found its offerings useful, pleasurable, or simply too convenient to resist. The system did not merely impose itself from above. It settled into everyday life because it answered, with extraordinary fluency, some of the most familiar human desires: the wish for ease, for speed, for connection, for recognition, for a life with fewer frictions.
This is what made the surrender so difficult to see clearly. It did not feel like surrender. It felt like modern life improving itself. Search became instant. Communication became effortless. Shopping became seamless. Entertainment became endless. Identity itself became easier to perform, curate, and project. The digital world did not demand sacrifice in the language of duty. It offered seduction in the language of service. It asked very little at first: a little more data, a little more attention, a little more trust. In return, it delivered comfort with remarkable efficiency.
That bargain helps explain why ethical concern so often struggled to compete with convenience. Privacy felt abstract. Ease felt immediate. The long term implications of surveillance, behavioural influence, and dependence were difficult to weigh against the short term satisfactions of a system that worked, or seemed to. What was lost in autonomy was often disguised by what was gained in convenience. The more friction disappeared, the less frequently people paused to ask who had removed it, and for whose benefit.
There was also a psychological comfort in the arrangement. To be online was to be seen, connected, updated, included. Platforms did not merely organise information. They organised belonging. To withdraw, or even to hesitate, could begin to feel like a form of absence. This is partly why the digital economy proved so resilient even in the face of repeated scandal. Outrage would flare, criticism would sharpen, and yet participation would continue. Dependence had already sunk deeper than disapproval.
The same pattern can be seen in more recent waves of technological enthusiasm. The speculative culture around crypto was sustained not only by insiders and opportunists, but by a broader appetite for access, transformation, and the fantasy of arriving early to the future. The current excitement around artificial intelligence draws on a similar instinct. People are not only impressed by AI. They are drawn to what it seems to offer: speed without effort, productivity without delay, intelligence on demand. Its appeal is not simply technical. It is emotional.
That is why the ethics of the digital age cannot be understood only as a problem of corporate behaviour or regulatory weakness. They are also bound up with the social psychology of convenience. A system becomes powerful not just when it can extract, but when people learn to welcome the conditions under which extraction becomes possible. The most durable forms of control are often those that arrive as assistance.
None of this means the public should be treated as morally equivalent to those who design, profit from, or strategically exploit these systems. Power remains unevenly held, and responsibility remains unevenly distributed. But it does mean that any serious account of digital ethics must confront an awkward fact: the modern internet was not built only through coercion or deception. It was also built through consent, habit, and the quiet pleasures of convenience.
Can the Bargain Still Be Broken?
Artificial intelligence has arrived at precisely the moment when society is most tempted to confuse acceleration with progress.
Its appeal is easy to understand. It promises relief from effort, speed in place of delay, fluency where once there was friction. It offers answers, summaries, predictions, efficiencies, automation, and a growing sense that the world itself may soon become more responsive to human demand. For businesses, governments, and investors, the attraction is even greater. AI appears not simply as a tool, but as leverage, a way to cut costs, consolidate advantage, outpace rivals, and shape the next commanding layer of economic life. The language surrounding it is often grand, sometimes messianic.
And yet the question remains stubbornly moral. Intelligence, however dazzling, does not arrive innocent simply because it is artificial.
The systems now being celebrated are built on inherited conditions: unequal access to compute, immense concentrations of capital, vast repositories of data, precarious human labour hidden behind seamless outputs, and legal frameworks still struggling to catch up with technical reality. In that sense, AI does not break with the ethical failures of the digital age. It intensifies them. It takes an internet already shaped by extraction, dependence, and asymmetrical power, and gives it a new aura of authority. What earlier systems observed, AI can now interpret. What platforms once sorted, AI can now generate. What was previously passive infrastructure is becoming active mediation.
That is why the ethical question is no longer whether technology should innovate more gently while continuing on the same path. It is whether society is willing to decide that some forms of power, however profitable or efficient, must be constrained before they harden into the next common sense. This is where regulation matters, but it is also where regulation alone will not be enough. Laws can set boundaries, force disclosures, punish abuses, and protect rights. But they cannot by themselves restore a moral culture that has too often admired speed more than judgment, and disruption more than responsibility.
What would a more serious digital ethics look like now? It would begin by rejecting the idea that ethics is a decorative layer added after invention has already reshaped the world. It would insist that questions of consent, power, dignity, labour, authorship, ownership, and accountability belong at the centre of design, not at the edges of compliance. It would ask not only what a system can do, but who it serves, who it weakens, who profits, who disappears behind its smooth surface, and who is told that the cost is simply the future arriving.
That may sound demanding. It is. But every technological age reveals, sooner or later, what it truly worships. Efficiency is not wisdom. Scale is not justice. Intelligence is not virtue. A civilisation that forgets those distinctions does not become more advanced merely because its tools become more sophisticated. It simply learns to surrender itself with greater precision.
This is why the old story still lingers beneath the modern one. The enduring lesson of Faustus was never that knowledge should be feared. It was that the pursuit of power without moral discipline carries a cost that is rarely visible at the moment of triumph. The danger lies in the bargain being mistaken for destiny. In the feeling that because something can be built, funded, scaled, and desired, it must therefore be right.
But habits are not fate.
The choice before society is not between embracing innovation and rejecting it. It is between allowing the next era of digital life to deepen the same pattern of moral surrender, or demanding that intelligence, however powerful, remain answerable to human values that cannot be priced, optimised, or automated away. The future of technology may yet be brilliant. The more difficult question is whether it can also remain wise.
